In Sälen, every season offers something unique. From reliable winter skiing and vibrant Vasaloppet celebrations to flower-filled mountain trails in summer and golden autumn landscapes, this is a destination where nature sets the rhythm of the year.
Sälen is one of Scandinavia’s most popular mountain destinations, known for its large ski areas, well-prepared cross-country trails and family-friendly atmosphere. Whether you visit for winter sports, hiking, wildlife or peaceful days in the fresh mountain air, there is always something to experience.
Vasaloppet Week
Sälen is also known as the starting point of the world’s largest and longest cross-country ski race, Vasaloppet, with approximately 16,000 participants. It takes place on the first Sunday in March, and during the week before the main event, additional races attract around 45,000 participants.
Since this coincides with the Swedish winter school holidays, the Sälen area is very busy. It is advisable to book your holiday well in advance.
Snow Reliability
Sälen offers reliable downhill skiing from mid-December through April thanks to consistently cold temperatures and advanced snowmaking systems.

Spring, Summer and Autumn
Late spring (April–June) marks the transition from skiing to hiking and cycling. Alpine flowers such as mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), pasque flower (Pulsatilla vernalis) and purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia) bloom across the mountains.
Wildlife becomes more visible as nature awakens. Moose, roe deer and mountain hares move through forests and open landscapes, while birds return to the mountains.
By late summer and autumn, lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) and crowberries (Empetrum nigrum) ripen, and dwarf birch (Betula nana) turns golden — a perfect season for hiking and photography.
